O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high school student. She advanced to the top 100 round because the judges were thrilled at her singing performances. O'Neil's performance was highly praised by jury. Despite this, O'Neil suffered a significant loss during her Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the lowest 3 and the second lowest. Judges were horrified by this and informed the crowd the fact that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she didn't even make it to the bottom three once again. Following two stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, when O'Neil along with Rex Goudie advanced to the competition's final two, judge Werner said that newspaper headlines were going to read O'Neil beat Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the most youthful winner in the competition's history . O'Neil got a call from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on winning Canadian Idol right away.
